Body Fat Calculator: US Navy Tape Method
You can estimate body fat at home with a measuring tape using the US Navy method, which combines height with neck and waist (plus hip for women). Results are usually within a few percentage points of lab methods for most adults.

How to measure
- Neck: just below the Adam’s apple, tape sloping slightly down at the front.
- Waist (men): horizontally at the navel. Waist (women): at the narrowest point.
- Hip (women): at the widest point of the buttocks.
- Measure in the morning, relaxed, tape snug but not compressing the skin.
Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy body fat percentage?
Common fitness ranges (American Council on Exercise) are 14–24% for men and 21–31% for women; athletes are often 6–13% (men) and 14–20% (women).
How accurate is the US Navy body fat method?
It is an estimate. Accuracy depends on careful measuring and is lower for very lean or very muscular people. Track the trend over weeks rather than a single reading.
